Have trouble with fuel consumption or a failing engine? A magnetic pickup sensor is probably what you need to solve the problem.

When an engine fails to start or gives you a hard time starting, a mag pickup sensor replacement goes a long way in ensuring that your vehicle is in perfect shape.

Now that you know how easily a magnetic pickup sensor can help solve all your engine troubles, how do you install it? Here is a complete and detailed guide on the installation process, but first;

Signs That You Need A Mag Pickup Sensor Replacement

  • A super slow engine
  • Engine failing to start
  • Unusually high fuel consumption
  • Experiencing frequent electrical shorts

If you experience any of the above, it may be time to install a magnetic pickup sensor. Here is how to do it:

How To Install A Magnetic Pickup Sensor: Step By Step Process

  • Prepare The Mounting

First, prepare where there the magnetic pickup sensor is to be housed. If there is no mounting location, you can create your own by drilling a hole in the flywheel housing, ensuring it lies at its ring teeth’s center and at a 90-degree angle to the crankshaft center.

  • Insert The Magnetic Wheel Speed Sensor

Into the hole you drilled on the flywheel housing or the provided mounting, insert the magnetic pickup; the goal is for it to touch the face of the gear. Therefore, do not stop turning it as you insert it into the hole until you achieve this.

  • Backing Up The Magnetic Pickup Sensor

Inserting it is not enough; you have to ensure that it is set in the right way, angles, and directions. For a magnetic sensor to be at its optimal output, there should be a gap between it and the gear it is in contact with.

How do you achieve this gap?

First, the gap should not be huge, rather only between half a millimeter to about 0.9 of an inch. You have to turn the magnetic pickup sensor at a ¾ anti-clockwise turn to achieve this. Depending on the magnetic sensor, this should be enough to help you achieve the optimal gap.

  • Twisting Wire Leads

The final step is to twist the wire leads. Twisting the wire leads makes it easy to cancel environmental interference, which may disrupt signals.

To keep the signals strong, you need to twist the wire leads from the magnetic pickup sensor to the control unit, for more effectiveness. For longer leads, you may have to shield them to prevent external interference.
